Stephen Sondheim: "Another Hundred People" from Company (Original Broadway Cast Recording): Singer Pamela Myers has an old-school Broadway belt that powers effortlessly over a driving, layered, brilliantly contrapuntal orchestral score in this sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful, sometimes resigned Greek-chorus anthem to the unavoidable loneliness and transience in a massive city of strangers. But despite its surface melancholy, the song maintains an undercurrent of optimism and even joy from its first social observation all the way through to its brassy, triumphant, take-no-prisoners conclusion that will leave you breathless.
